Generally both CloudLibrary and Libby books can be renewed but only if there are no holds on the title and only if it is within 3 days of the loan expiring. If a title has no holds, starting at 3 days before your loan expires, you should be able to renew it. You will want to use the Libby website, the Libby app, the CloudLibrary website or the CloudLibrary app to renew.

How you renew an e-book depends on if it is a CloudLibrary or Libby/OverDrive book, and which app or website you are using.

For directions to renew Libby/OverDrive titles, see this link > Renewing Titles Using Libby. If the "Renew" button next to a title is greyed out or does not appear in the Manage Loans menu then you can't renew it.

For CloudLibrary, go to My Books section in CL app or CL website. Find your book and look to the right of the Read or Listen button for the 3 dots ... Tap the 3 dots .... If "Renew" does not appear in the pop-up menu, then you can't renew it.

Reasons why you can't renew it:

  • Someone else has the book on hold. In Libby, you'll see a Place Hold button (instead of Renew), which means you need to wait to borrow the book again.
  • It may be too early to renew the book. You'll be able to renew a book 3 days before it's due.
  • The book is no longer in your library's catalog. This may happen because the book has expired and the library has not purchased a new copy yet. Many publishers lease e-books to libraries and they expire after a certain amount of time, generally 1 or 2 years.
